If you know one thing about me, it probably has something to do with my love of Irish culture, dance, and music. That love extends to the rest of the Celtic countries, as well, though I don’t know as much about them as I do Ireland. I have never been to Scotland, for example, but stories of Selkies and Unicorns still capture my attention.
So, because of this deep rooted passion for Celtic lands and cultures, I was thrilled to discover The Spellbinding Secret of Avery Buckle. This book tells the story of a girl named Avery who feels like she doesn’t quite fit in with her peers—for more reasons than one. At the Halloween disco, Avery and her best friend Low find their lives dramatically altered as they learn more about one another and a magical world that is closer than they thought. Their journey takes them all over Scotland as they puzzle out a mysterious riddle that holds secrets about their destiny. Please see my full review here.
When I first started reading this book, I found the beginning to be somewhat disjointed and forced, as I didn’t connect well with Avery or Low before the action really got going. This was an initial challenge, but as the story progressed, I found myself frequently surprised by the direction of the narrative and the rich plot it contains. The story unfolds better and better as each page is turned, leaving the reader mostly satisfied by the end.
The incorporation of Scottish language, musical references, culture, and folklore make this a delightfully magical adventure for readers with an interest in these things. Though it is written for a middle grade audience, older readers will appreciate the story, as well. I hope you get a chance to check out this lovely story and get in touch with some enjoyable aspects of Scottish culture!
