Environmental conservation is an important topic these days as climate change is ravaging our world. Though it can seem like an insurmountable problem, it is not unlike others humanity has faced through the centuries. However, when humans work together instead of trying to solve the problem on their own, change is more likely to come faster.
Willa of Dark Hollow is the second in its series written by Robert Beatty. It is set in the Great Smoky Mountains of the United States in 1901, a time when widespread logging was destroying the forested lands of the country. Willa is a Faeran, a humanoid creature who is an extension of the forest itself, able to commune with the trees and animals through an ancient language. Though humans are responsible for the destruction of her forest home, Willa knows that not all humans are the same. It requires everyone choosing to work together despite their differences to protect the Great Smoky Mountains from ultimate destruction. Please see my full review here.
I loved this story’s deeply entrenched message that there is no I, only we. It is so easy to forget that fact, especially with the COVID-19 pandemic continuing to rage around us over a year later. Though we are separated from one another for the most part, it requires teamwork and collaboration to find a solution that will keep our world from being destroyed.
It’s true that there are many human-made problems facing the world today. But, through stories like Willa’s, people of all ages can remember that humans are good at working together to solve problems. When we do this, we can create vaccines, stop holes in the ozone layer from growing, and cultivate plants to help restore the balance within our air. Together, we can make the world a better place, even if it means planting a seed today to be harvested later on.
